August Update: UI Overhaul, New Interiors, and More!

    Hey everyone!

The August update brings significant improvements to the game, particularly in the UI and gameplay experience.

    UI Enhancements:

    • Shop UI: I’ve revamped the shop interface to offer a cleaner look and better showcase items. Everything is more centred, and item names now fit nicely for improved presentation.
    • Dialogue UI: I’ve made some adjustments to the dialogue interface, giving it a slight visual upgrade. This is still a work in progress, but it’s looking better for now.
    • Inventory & Character Sheet: These have been combined into one interface. Now, pressing “Tab” will open the inventory and give you access to skill points. The UI has been refined to make equipped items stand out, with everything better aligned and centred. I’ve also started working on a new type of equipment—rings. There are two extra slots available, though one might change to a belt in future updates.
    • Quest UI: The quest interface has been improved, with the quest background made more prominent. An exclamation mark has been added to the quest book icon, making it easier to spot.
    • Pause Menu UI: The pause menu has been updated with a couple of new buttons. There’s now a “Controls” button for quick access to the game’s controls key. Additionally, a “Quit” button has been added, allowing you to exit without saving. This is useful if you want to restart from the last auto-save point.

    Pickups:

Pickups have been updated to make item tiers more visible. Now, when you see an item, its name will be clearly displayed, helping you decide whether to keep it or leave it. Its name will be coloured based on its rank with silver/white tier 1, green tier 2, and so on. This change makes it easier to distinguish between different tiers of weapons and gear. Currently, there are five tiers, with more likely to come in future updates.

    New Interior Scenes:

In the previous update, I introduced a house to explore in the first level. Now, I’ve added an explorable church interior, which changes how the main quest unfolds. You can now enter the church, aligning more closely with the game’s narrative and vision. The church also leads to dungeons as you progress through the game.

    Demo Update:

The demo will be updated to include all the changes mentioned above, plus the new church scene. This should increase the overall playtime. The demo will soon feature Warlington Town, the Church scene (which concludes the demo), and the house interior.

    Other smaller improvements:

    • Cinematic Intro: The cinematic intro at the start of the first level has been edited for a better way of showing points of interest, also it was shortened.
    • Lighting Enhancements: Earlier this month, I improved the lighting across all levels, which complements the current update.
    • Combat Improvements: You can now attack and take potions simultaneously, allowing you to heal while staying engaged in combat. This was again released in the middle of the month.

    Studio News:

I recently attended the Glasgow World Conference, where I had the opportunity to showcase my studio’s work and my game, Rise of the Village Hero. The event lasted five days, and it was an incredible experience to present the game to a wider audience. Seeing people play my game live again was awesome!

Thank you for checking out the August update! I’ll start working on the plan for the September update as soon as this one is released. I hope you enjoy the new features, and I look forward to sharing more in the next update.

I will now work to update the Itchio build which may take me a couple of days to do. Thank you for your support and I apologies for not keeping these up to date more. I shall try do more in the future.

    See you soon!
